Bad Company

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , on August 17, 2008 by mdjasrie

Getting ill, down with the flu is not fun at all, especially if its during the weekend, the two days that im suppose to enjoy to the fullest. Had muscle aches, fever and a very sore throat since Friday last week. I hope i can get well asap.

Anyway, since i had to stay at home and consume my medicine periodically, i spent my time playing Battlefield Bad Company on the PS3 and completed it.

The singleplayer campaign, though fun, is very short in my opinion. I can play the entire campaign in one day. But what i like about this game is the attention to detail, from graphics, to AI and really bombastic sound effects. Never have i played a game with fantastic sound. The sound of bullets, to missiles, the explosions are all really powerful. Crank the volume up and you almost feel as if you are in the middle of the battlefield. Other than that, its an above average shooter, with some interesting elements to it that makes this game somewhat unique. The characters, though funny, never really had the time to appreciate them over the course of the game.

The game is really easy, in a sense that if you die, youll respawn back to the last checkpoint, but what ever enemies youve killed, would not respawn again. In other words, you can charge up and kill some of them, die, respawn and charge up again to continue, without having to kill those dead soldiers in the previous battle. Also, the unlimited supply of health syringes, makes the game even easier. About to die? Then just give youserlf a jab and youll be back at full health.

What i like about the game is the use of tanks, vehicles, boats, helicopter and missle guiding systems. You dont have to be on foot to do the shooting. The game allows plenty of opportunity to try out different ways to accomplish or reach your target. Alot of vehicles and tanks are dotted throughout the map and you can use them to get you from point A to point B, while killing some enemies off along the way. This adds variety to the game and really makes the singleplayer aspect of the game interesting.

After having played Call of Duty 4, which by far the most enjoyable FPS i ever played, Bad Company is still has a long way to go, before proving itself to be a worthy competitor to Call of Duty 4.

Jake Gyllenhaal in Prince of Persia: First Images!!

So a year ago, when it was announced that The Prince of Persia franchise was going to get the hollywood treatment, i was ecstatic. It was a brilliant franchise to start a movie, but at the same time, there could always be a million and one ways to get it wrong. It was also disappointing when i heard that the prince, of Persia, would not be a persian actor after all. They decided to go with Jake Gyllenhaal. I was like WHAT?! Are you crazy?! I mean, we have the all mighty Jerry Bruckheimer, the maker of various hit TV shows, and mega movie franchises (Think CSI, Amazing Race, Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy, National Treasure). We also have Mike Newell to direct the film. So i guess the franchise is in safe hands right? Well maybe.

Prince of Persia the Sands of Time
Considering that ive played all the 3 modern Prince of Persia game titles, I thoroughly enjoyed the first and the third installments of the games. Its also kinda cool that the movie is gonna be loosely based on the trilogy, adding to the fact that the title of the movie is Prince of Persia, the Sands of Time. So naturally, you would think that the story, the environments, the theme and finally the costumes would be based on the first installment of the game. Well not so.

Finally the images of Jake Gyllenhaal in his princely costume have been released all over the internet. In all its glory with the cosmetics, and dirt, dust on his body and face.

The moment i saw this picture, i told myself. It looks good. In fact, it was better than i expected really. I had little to no faith in having Jake play out this important role, but after looking at this image, he might, JUST might, play a good role as a prince in the upcoming movie.By the looks of it, he certainly has gained some mass just to play out in this nimble and acrobatic prince. So far it has been a faithful reproduction of the original video game franchise. Just look at the concept image of the prince. (click to see it bigger)

Pretty good huh? But what got me puzzled is why this costume? This costume is used in the third part of the series, Prince of Persia The Two Thrones. Is the producer using materials from all 3 parts of the game to make a single movie? Are they mixing certain video game elements of all three games to give unique flavour for the movie? Whats the storyline like? Are they going to follow certain elements of the first movie, or all three, or something completely different?  Only time will tell and we have more than 2 years to speculate before the movie is officially released in summer of 2010.

It was originally slated for summer of 09, but it got pushed back a year. Reports states the delay was to give more time for post production and special effects team to really make a good movie and be successful in bringing life to this amazing franchise onto the big screen. Others state that the competition for next year’s blockbuster movies, mainly the release of Transformers 2, would dampen the potential success of Prince of Persia. It would be interesting to see Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer battle it out during the period, but it seems that this would not be the case any more.

For fans of Prince of Persia (like me) a brand new video game franchise is in the works, the first due end of this year. The new game would feature new gameplay styles, new graphics direction, a new female character, Elika, and above all, an all new Prince.

Thats 13 video games so far from start to finish, 2 from the PC. Now that is a record. Ever since i got the console, ive never played that many games in a year, much less in a short span of 4 months. I enjoyed every game so far, and played from start to finish. It is a huge investment to date, but at the same time, a worthwhile investment. I hope to play more innovative, and AAA games that is yet to be released in the near future. These are some that im looking forward to.

So the game has begun! All eyes around the world are watching the games closely as China hosts it’s first ever Olympic games this year. The opening ceremony which was held on the auspicious date (According to the chinese) 080808 at 8pm started and ended in a grand fanfare of lights, colours and music. Over 90 000 spectators were in the stadium watching first hand as the opening ceremony unfolded for more than 3 hours.

I was watching the opening and from the begining to the end, it was almost flawless. Directed by none other than Zhang Yimou and internationaly acclaimed filmmaker and cinematographer, he makes use of space, colour and technology to bring the ceremony to life. I was impressed through and through and after watching it, i now have a better respect towards the people of China. China is now ready to take on the new world. The final hour or so of the ceremony came the march of athletes from all over the world. With a record of over 200 nations participating in the games this year, it took a quite a while before the Singapore contingent of athletes came into view. But still it was still a sight to behold, as Li Jiawei walked around the new Bird’s Nest Stadium as a flag bearer.

And today, Tao Li, our olympic athlete hopeful, started competiting in the butterfly 100m women heats event and came out top in the heats. She made it to semifinal, ranked no. 4. The semifinal event will take place on sunday morning, around 10am. She equalled an asian record in the heats event of 57.77seconds.
