One Liter of Tears (Aya’s Diary) online order.

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on May 20, 2008 by mdjasrie

I have received tremendous enquiries on how to acquire the Aya’s Diary, as evidenced from this entry of my blog. I also realised that a number of you who commented here or emailed me are keen in getting the book but are unable to because it is unavailable online.

Well good news for you guys, because i might be willing to help some of you in in getting this book for yourself. As I was able to get a copy at my own local bookstore (Kinokuniya), I might be willing to place a few orders and you might be one of the lucky ones in purchasing it through me.

However, nothing is concrete yet. I’m currently very busy at the moment and i have doubts that they might still have copies of the book available. Even if they run out of stock, it might take a while for them to place an order from their Kinokuniya Japan Branch and have it arrive to Singapore. Even so, i might not be able to fullfull all orders if the demand are overwhelming.

So for those interested here is what i want you to do:

First, payment. Payment would most likely be done through paypal. So if you guys have a paypal account, it will be a great help for me to acquire the funds for the purchase of the book.

Second, price. The price have not been set yet. But tentatively, it would be anywhere between 35SGD to 40SGD, excluding shipping costs. That translates roughly to about USD25 to USD30, EUR 16 to EUR 20 EUR, 13 GBP to 16 GBP (see currency converter)

Third, Shipping. The price of shipping will be made known to you, once its been confirmed that I would be selling it to you. If you agree to the final costs (book + shipping) the transaction will proceed and i would ship the book to your address immediately. The shipping cost should not be too expensive, as a portion of the total price of the book stated above has already been taken into account. The problem is that there are varying costs associated when shipping to different countries, therefore adjustments have to be made.

So, if you are truly interested, do email me, stating that you are serious in getting yourself a copy, and do state you country of origin, so that i would roughly know where i have to ship it to. I just need your country of origin, not the entire address, so that i can start finding out the shipping costs to you country. Rest assured that i will reply to your email, to acknowledge your interest and who knows you might be the lucky one :)

Ill have more updates in the coming weeks. So do stay tune.

Completed GTA IV!!

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on May 19, 2008 by mdjasrie

Incredible, just incredible.

After almost 3 weeks of playing the game, i managed to complete GTA IV. Not 100% progression complete though, just the storyline itself. What a journey! This is the first game in the GTA franchise that i actually made the effort to go through the story from start to finish.

The people you meet, the places you go, the situations you were in… it was an incredible journey and Niko Belic itself has gotta be one of the most realistic characters that i have ever experienced. Everything from his personality, voice acting, background information etc was just astounding. So believable and human. The other casts in the game were fantastic too. Already i have a list in my mind from my most favourite character to the least favourite. The entire spectrum of personalities is in the game and you feel for almost all of them, whether you love someone or you hate the other.

As for the story, i must say, it was a little confusing, with a lot of backstabbing, betrayals and ever changing alliances between different groups of people. Toward the end of the story, or rather the game, it gets a little bit muddled and it can be overwhelming keeping tabs as to whos who. But it was engaging nonetheless.

I must say that this game is a true gem. The amount of effort the developers put in making this game is shown splattered all over the game. Kudos to the team! Im proud too, to have completed such a fine game and having a wonderful experience knowing the story about Niko Belic.

If Rockstar decides to develope GTA V, id be happy to play as Niko again, or perhaps a cameo appearance somewhere in another city.

Notable new anime series

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on May 12, 2008 by mdjasrie

This year’s Spring 2008 anime season is gonna be a busy one. With almost 30 new series airing in Japan alone, its gonna be tough for me to filter the good ones from the bad ones. Ive previewed (watched the first episode of the series as a first impression) almost half of the total series being released and i must say that this year’s quality is certainly better than last year’s. There are some potentially good ones out there right now. Why I say potential? Well its simply because that ive only watched the first episode of the series and its not justifiable to say whether its good or bad as a whole. But judging from episode one in terms of technical qualities, like voice acting quality, character design, animation and soundtrack, one can made predictions on whether a particular series is gonna be a hit or not.

Ive got a couple that i wanna share. First up is SOUL EATER.

SYNOPSIS

Set in the Shinigami technical school for weapon meisters, the series revolves around 3 groups of each a weapon meister and a human weapon. Trying to make the latter a “Death Scythe” and thus fit for use by the Shinigami, they must collect the souls of 99 evil humans and 1 witch.

SOUL EATER was the first anime series of the season that i watched. What i noticed instantly was the incredible and vibrant artwork used throughout the show. Its character designs are unique and there are some light hearted humor in this seemingly dark show. I like the strong bold lines used to accentuate certain designs, be it the background or the character art itself. This is certainly gotta be one of the better series to be released this season.

Second series: Nabari no Ou

SYNOPSIS

Rokujou Miharu is a boy who has a hijustu (hidden technique) living inside of him. This hijustu is the power of creation. Many ninja clans are seeking it as the one who posesses it becomes the ruler of the ninja world. Rokujou’s classmate Kouichi started a nindou (“Way of the Ninja”) club at school with Kumohira, his English teacher. Both Kouichi and Kumohira are secretly ninjas. They tried to persuade Rokujou to join the ninjustu club. At first, he was reluctant, but after being attacked by group of ninjas trying to get his hijutsu, he joins. He must become the Ruler of Nabari in order to survive.

This series got me intrigued. Not only does it have ninja and stuff behind a modern backdrop, but the story of having different warring ninja factions after a book inside a boy is interesting indeed. Not only that, the characters introduced in the first episode have a certain depth and a layer of realistic emotions. The background art is something to admire at. The sceneries in this anime series is just so surreal, so watercolor-like. It doesnt look simplistic, rather the sketching lines are retained in the art itself and just painted over, making it look really artistic. Just see the images below to know what i mean. Somehow im very keen to know what Rokujou Miharu would do, now that he knows he holds some terrible power that other ninja factions are after. Design wise, top notch for the characters, which is no surprise since JC Staff is doing most of the work and Square Enix is sponsoring the project.

Haze by Free Radical

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on May 11, 2008 by mdjasrie

Free Radical’s latest FPS, Haze demo was just released 2 days ago. I downloaded the demo to my PS3 immediately it went online and i must say that i was better than what i was expecting.

The game feels tight and there lots of action just by playing the Demo. The concept of having ‘Nectar’ being injected into you body, a type of bioenhancing drug that supposedly enhances your fighting ability is not really a totally fresh concept in the world of FPS. It feels very much like the Halo Franchise in terms of gameplay and the feel of the game as an FPS. Graphics arent jawdropping, but it isnt bad either. I enjoyed the demo pretty much, but im still skeptical on whether the hardcore FPS players out there would truly embrace this game. There have been very mixed reviews on the gameplay itself just by evaluating the demo. And with GTAIV fresh on the shelf, barely 2 weeks of release, Haze looks to have quite a hill up ahead to overcome if this were to prove itself to be a popular new franchise.

As for me, i dunno. I might get a copy of the game, but not on day one of release. The game is slated for 20th May 2008.

Era Reborn

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on May 7, 2008 by mdjasrie

It was quite awhile since i visited my local HMV shop. I was just looking around till i came across one of my favourite New Age group, Era.

I have their previous albums and they were all great. I like the fusion of traditional chants and choirs (in latin if im not wrong) with contemporary music melodies, making use of electric guitars and really cool percussion set to create some unique tracks. Eric Levi is certainly a great and talented artist.

His new album, entitled reborn has a completely different tune from his previous works. His works range from choirs and chants, to solo pieces sung in arabic and also techno/dance track pieces. Overall its a refreshing piece of album and i got it as soon as i sampled it.

You can listen to some of the sample tracks below.

Lyrics to Kilimandjaro.

Don’t say you wanna a better world
Don’t say you wanna a better life
When all you do is watch TV
And listen to the promises

Don’t say you wanna a better world
Don’t say you wanna a better life
When all you do is just rely
on the progresses of science

Don’t say another word, just let me dream

And look outside
where the wind blows and the flowers grow
Where the river goes
Taking my dreams away

Just let me go
Where the rain falls and the forest cries
Since there will be no more snow in Kilamandjaro

Don’t say you wanna a better world
Don’t say you wanna breathe clean air
When all you do is drive around
In your brand new SUV

Don’t say you wanna a better world
For all the children of mankind
When all you do is just rely
on the progresses of science

Don’t say another word, just let me dream

And look outisde
where the wind blows and the flowers grow
Where the river goes
Taking my dreams away

Just let me go
Where the rain falls and the forest cries
Since there will be no more snow in Kilamandjaro

Sony HT-SF2000, completing my home theater system experience.

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on May 1, 2008 by mdjasrie

I got a HDTV a long time ago. A 37 inch samsung LCD TV. Got a free Samsung DVD player and home theater speaker set during a promotion when bought together with the TV. However it sucked. The connectivity wasnt there. There were any coaxle  or optical outputs,  or HDMI outputs either. It was really barebone home theater system. Wasnt really suited for extra connectivity. In essence it sucked real bad.

Now comes along the new Sony HT-SF2000 home theater system with HDMI output that can transfer sound and image through the cable and onto the reciever. The PS3 is now permanent outside the living room, showing of its hardware and whats more, the receiver is able to receive Dolby Digital HD, DTS MA and uncompressed PCM at 48khz and 96Khz 24bits via LPCM mode. Man the thing is awesome. For the price its a real bargain. SGD 799 in total.

My living room aint big and we dont need such a high end receiver with separate speakers system. All i want is to be able to playback HD sound from the Blu ray discs and HT-SF2000 does the job just fine. Im using a separate LG DVD player that allows to also record programs from the TV, and thankfully have a coaxle output to connect to the receiver for 5.1 sound for DVD playback. Now my home theater experience is pretty much future proof with HDMI receiver, a PS3 that can play the next gen games and play blu rays and a HDTV.

Brief Overview of the education system in Singapore.

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on May 1, 2008 by mdjasrie

Dear Arthur,

Thanks for reading my blog on a regular basis. You mentioned that you were a little confused as to our education system in Singapore. Well let me explain and give a brief overview of the education system in Singapore.

The education system in Singapore has change quite drastically in the last decade or so. Back then when i was little, the path of progression seemed relatively simple and systematic. But now in the everchanging world and the different needs of students here, students now have a more varied path to progress in their education, based on their needs. But i will just go briefly.

Everyone would more or less start in the kindergarten stage. Its about 2 years before we go to primary school. In singapore we rarely use terms such as high school, or junior high. So the first 6 years would be spent in a primary school, learning basics such as English, Maths and a second language based on you race. Since Singapore is a multicultural society, we learn another language such as Malay, Chinese, or Tamil. And at Primary 4, you learn a new subject, Science. You start primary school at around the age of 7.

By the time your reached Primary 6, everyone have to go through the Primary School Leaving Examination or PSLE. Its a rather stressful period for students because its highly competitive. Its a national examination and your performance would directly impact which Secondary School you go to based on the choice you have chosen. Some secondary schools are better than the rest, and naturally if you are smart you go to a better school with better facilities, wide range of curricular activities etc. The maximum score one can accumulate in the exams is 300.

Given your performance of your PSLE, you will be streamed into different classes while you are in Secondary school. The first stream is the Normal Stream, a 5 year education, where students would take their N-Level Examination first, in the 4th year before taking the O-level Examination in the 5th Year. The second stream is the Express Stream, a 4 year course where students take the O-Level Examination directly. The main difference between the two is that the normal stream is catered to students who did not perform well in thier PSLE and as a result needed more time to learn and prepare them for the O-Level examination.

There is a third stream and that is the Normal Technical Stream. These are for students who are not academically inclined and would usually be admitted to Institute of Technical Eduction after they finish. I will not explain this part of the stream.

Some of the subjects that students can take would include:

English, Second language (Chinese, Malay, Tamil)

Maths (Elementary Maths, Additional Mathematics)

Science, such as Biology, Physics or Chemistry

Principles of Accounting

Humanities subjects such as Social Studies, Geography, History, Literature etc)

Others such as Design and Technology, Food and Nutrition, Arts, Music.

Students in secondary school would have to take a minimum of 6 subjects including the mandatory subjects of English, Maths and Science, to qualify for higher education. Students have not restrictions on how many they can take be it 8 or 10 subjects even. This gives students some flexibility in choosing the subjects that they enjoy learning or their paths to higher eduction. Again, the students performance would determine where they would go from there on. There are a few choices and the how the grades are calculated are as follows:

The grades obtained from each subject are such that A1 is the highest while F9 is the lowest, constituing a Fail. So its:

A1, A2 : Distinction

B3, B4: Merit

C5, C6: Pass

D7, E8. F9: Fail

So for example if you ace all your minimum 6 subjects you took for the examination, you would effectively have 6 points, since A1 constitute 1 point and all 6 subjects, having A1s would earn you 6 points. In essence the lower the points the better your performance in your exams.

In higher education, students can go to a Junior College, a Polytechnic or an Institute of Technical Education.

Junior Colleges are for students who performed really well in their O level Examination. The criteria for admittance to a Junior college is that you must not exceed 20 points in total any 6 subjects you took, with English as a main criteria. Therefore if you ace all 6 subjects you have 6 points, and you will be able to go to the best junior college the country has to offer.Similarly, if a student too 10 subjects and ace them all, they are able to pick any 6 required for admittance and still get minimum of 6 subjects. You are basically the cream of the crop.

A Junior college is a 2 year course, taking a wide range of subjects that are both deep and profound. It is a very stressful environment, as it drills you to prepare for the University life, after taking the A-Level Examination. Again similar to the secondary school level, you will take the national examination, and your performance would dictate which university and the desired degree course you can enter. The choice of subjects are also essential in which degree courses youll be able to enter.

An alternative and increasingly more popular route would be the Polytechnic Route. It is a 3 year course and by the end of the 3 years, you would earn a diploma of the course you have chosen. The criteria for admittance is that you must not exceed 28 points in 5 subjects with English and Maths as the main criteria. The diplomas offered varies widely between the different polytechnics in Singapore. There are many diplomas offered in different areas such as health sciences, engineering, chemical and life sciences, digital media and design, business and management, and Information technology.

Certain more popular courses would obviously have a lower cut off points for admittance. Certain courses like Biotechnology would need students to score lower than 13 points to enter, while courses like nursing and engineering would require around 24 or 26 points to enter. The cutoff points changes every year to reflect the demand and supply of the number of slots available for students to enter and the industry’s demands and trends.

After the 3 year course, a small percentage of students would have done well enough to enter a local university, while the majority will study overseas or immediately enter the workforce with their skills obtained and diploma certificate.

Polytechnics uses a different type of grading system, the Grade Point Average. Exams and performances are based from A+ to F.

A+, A : 4.0

B+:3.5

B:3.0

C+ 2.5

C:2.0

D+:1.5

D: 1.0

F:0

The more As you have the higher the GPA. GPA are averaged out after your 3 years. To enter a local university via the Polytechnic route requires the student to be really talented. Students would need at least 3.5 in GPA and above to enter, which means that they need to perform consistently well throughout the 3 years as the grades are averaged out. Even then, its no guarantee that you would be able to enter the course in university that matches the course you took in Polytechnic. For example, if you were to take a biotechnology course in Polytechnic, its not a guarantee that you would be able to enter a science faculty and take a degree in biomedical sciences in the university. Majority of students are from Junior colleges and its leaves very little placings for polytechnic students. It is during this period where competition for placings are at their feverish levels.

______________________________

So which path did i take?

I went to an average primary school, took the PSLE. Scored a 212 out of a possible 300, which is just above average and to an Express stream, a 4 year course in an average Secondary School. I took English, Elementary Maths, Malay, Principles of Accounts, Combined Sciences(Physics and Chemistry) Combined Humanities (Social Studies and Geography). I took the bare minimum of 6 subjects.

I was able to enter the Junior college, because i got 19 points for L1R5 criteria (1 Language which is English and other 5 relevant subjects. Since i had 19 points, i thought that i would suck if i were to go to a lousy Junior College. I also didnt want to stress myself too much either. So i went to the polytechnic route. Criteria was L1R4 (1 Language which is English and 4 Relevant subjects). I left out Malay, my second language since i performed the worst in that (C6). Therefore if i got a total of 19 points for all my 6 subjects, and left out Malay, C6 grade , i am able to deduct 6 points off, 19-6 = 13.

For 13 points i was lucky to be able to be admitted to the School of Chemical And Life Sciences, Diploma in Molecular Biotechnology in Nanyang Polytechnic.

After 3 years, i got a GPA in 3.5 and I was fortunately admitted to Nanyang Technological University, College of Science, Degree in Biological Sciences.

Im entering University in June 2009 and already have a placing there.

So, i hope that enlightens you! If you need any clarifications please dont hesitate to ask.
